Dr. Craig Vanlengen nominated Lawrence Rhodes for Student of the Month. Lawrence is a great representative of many of the NAU Extended campus students: He is a non-traditional student who is returning to college after years of experience to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis in Technology Management.
Mr. Rhodes’ first degree was in chemistry. While performing research in California, he linked a mass spectrometry instrumentation to very old Mac Quadra computers and saw the high resolution decay spectra appear like magic on the computer display – whatever that means – and that was when, as Lawrence likes to say, he was “bitten by the IT bug.” He has various vendor specific information technology qualifications, such as Cisco Systems CCNA, CCDA, and CCNP certifications as well as CompTIA Server+, A+, TestOut Network Pro, and others. After pursuing these vendor specific qualifications, he decided a more encompassing BS degree would be a better use of his time.
The NAU 90/30 program worked well for Mr. Rhodes as he was able to complete his Bachelor of Science degree in about a year. Lawrence liked the NAU Extended Campus program because he could complete his degree from home without the added expense of commuting to a campus. He is very satisfied with the degree program, he found it very economical and is thankful that he could complete his degree with no student debt. Mr. Rhodes will complete his degree in May 2015; and in the fall, Mr. Rhodes is planning to attend Harvard University’s Information Technology master’s program.
Mr. Rhodes is a small business owner and has a couple of interesting hobbies: an anachronistic instrumental surf band and digital illustration which can be seen at http://ssiv.org and http://machine-language.net.
I would like to congratulate Lawrence for all of his achievements in the #NAU program! Congratulations on being selected as the February 2015 #NAUBBAStudentoftheMonth!
